Although there have been major evolvements in technology
throughout the years, I do not believe that writing in this century is a wholly
different writing experience than previously. I definitely think that the field
of writing has expanded and improved, but writing today is still for the purpose
of expressing some sort of a a written message, just like it has been in the
past.
However, the evolvement of writing is definitely noticeable
through the emergence of digital media. Writing was once simply jotting down
information on a piece of paper and it would have to be delivered to a certain
person if that was the goal. Today, we are able to write a message and have it
delivered in seconds through many different technologies. We are able to write
to multiple people at once, all around the world if we choose. Social media is
a huge platform for reaching people across multiple areas through writing. For
example, sharing a status on your Facebook opens your ideas to all of the people
you are Facebook friends with. This could be reaching a small amount of people or
over thousands of people. Facebook also has the opportunity to share things,
which spreads ideas to people outside of your friend list. With the presence of
social media, people can express their feelings and instantly get feedback.
This has improved writing in many ways, because now people are able to alter
their ideas and their writing styles based on the constructive criticism that
people give. Texting people is another way to easily reach a large audience in
seconds. This gives people the opportunity to reach individuals with more
personalized messages that go directly to that one person or multiple people.
Another thing that has evolved is the writing in books. Books
used to only be written on paper, and there were not multiple copies produced
at once. Now, because of digital media, books can be accessed online and
through devices such as a Kindle. These books have the ability to reach
millions of people. The writing is the same as it was in the past, but the
platforms in which the writing is presented has grown largely to be where it is
today.
