Journal Response 1
I can't say that writing in today's day and age is so revolutionarily different than it was in previous writing experiences. It is different and the same in many different aspects. A way that it is different, technologically speaking, is the way we express these thoughts. From pen and paper to the typewriter, to the keyboard, it's definitely evolved into an easier and more fluid process. Jim Porter goes through all those processes, but he's not talking about writing in itself he's talking about the devices through which we write. I go in-between challenging the fact that writing hasn't really changed because either way you are expressing your thoughts in a more solid form, or if it actually has because the digital world has inhibited people to speak their mind in a way that isn't judged or constantly verified or rejected. When you think about it though, we still see a lot of expression whether it's good or bad all over social media. I think the new way of writing can influence the person if that person is easily influenced. Writing pre- digital era took way longer to receive feedback on, so you didn't know whether your thoughts were justified or not. This is how a lot of great ideas came into play, which is the same as today just using a different medium. Think of how many times you saw something on Facebook that changed your way of thinking or exposed you to a new idea? I see something like that every day when I read what someone wrote; this happened years ago except the return rate was much much slower. You can point out many areas in which writing is the same, and how it was different, but I don't think revolutionary is the right term for it. What has been revolutionarily is not writing itself, but the way its shared through social media and the internet. Jim Porter says that how technology matters in writing varies, that doesn't mean that technology encompasses every aspect of the process. Writing in itself is not extremely revolutionary, what is is the medium through which we put those thoughts into the world.
