Journal Response 4
I believe a remix assemblage is a great platform for learning. One of the many examples that was given in the Assemblage article was web design templates. These templates are there to make your life easier when you want to design a webpage of any kind. These templates can be edited and you can do a lot of different things with them. That is the most important part of these templates, they can be edited. Once you begin editing webpage templates, you start by making a few edits here and there to make the template suit what you need it to do. You continue doing that and while you are doing that, you are learning web design. Thanks to the easy to use template, you are learning a new skill because that template was simply not enough for you. Eventually, you are going to be limited by the template you have made many edits on and then move on to making your own webpage without a template and you will use the skills you gained editing a template, to make a webpage. Another great example of this is fan made video games. There are many games that that has been hacked into and edited to make a completely new experience with games that people know and love. Doing that teaches people level design skills and it teaches them how to make games themselves. Yes, these fan made games are games that rip apart existing games and the companies who make these games often do not like having their games ripped apart and remixed. However, thanks to that, we have people who are becoming game designers because they remixed a game they loved. A few of these remixers then go on to make their own games and a few of them become huge successes that sells millions of units of their own games. What we gain from remix assemblage is simple; we gain skills that allow us to go and create our own texts and works that we can proudly show off to the world. It gives us a base to work off of instead of making us start from scratch with no base at all. There is nothing wrong with that, but to say that someone who does a remix assemblage is lazy is completely wrong.
